Feeding
The number one rule in caring for your tropical aquarium fish is never overfeed them. Don’t turn the tank into a snow globe! If your fish are still chomping away five minutes later, then you’ve given them too. The excess flakes drift into nooks and crannies in tropical aquariums and rot, causing water pollution, a major cause of disease. Some fish, such as discus (which are very sensitive to water pollution) are happiest being fed very little and often. However, for most species of tropical fish, twice a day should be ample. Just make sure everyone else in the house is aware when you’ve fed them, to avoid doubling up.
Just like us, your tropical fish will appreciate a varied diet. If you were presented with the same meal every day, you would soon grow tired! There is a massive variety of tropical fish food on the market these days and you should consider stocking two different kinds, to keep your fish interested. The average fishkeeper will fare much better purchasing small jars and replacing more often. It may be more economical to buy in bulk, but actually, tropical fish food does deteriorate over time. This way you help keep it fresh.
Some varieties of fish food are specially designed to bring out the colours of your fish for a more attractive display. Other kinds, such as brine shrimp and bloodworm, are helpful with breeding. Live food is an excellent choice, being far closer to what your tropical fish would eat in the wild and always makes a nice treat. We don’t recommend you go out and catch live food yourselves as this can easily introduce disease to the tank – it is readily available for purchase.
If you’re going away, your fish should manage just fine without food for a few days, but may nibble at any live plants! If it’s going to be more than a few days and you have a friend or neighbour you can rely on to take care of your tropical aquarium for you, then so much the better. Just be sure to show them how much food to give and explain how important it is not to overfeed them. Most people are tempted to feed much more than your tropical fish actually need, which can have disastrous consequences. You can, of course, now purchase automatic feeders for tropical aquariums which are the ultimate solution, facilitating several feedings per day, some with separate storage bays for different types of food!
