Maintenance
Each day at feeding time you should do a quick head count to make sure all the fish in your tropical aquarium are accounted for. Dead fish should be removed immediately as they will quickly begin to decompose leading to pollution and spread of disease in tropical aquariums. Check they all look healthy. Heed any warning signs of disease, as this needs to be nipped in the bud quickly before it spreads to your other fish.
Take a look at the temperature guage to check the heater is working properly and ensure the air pump (if you have one) and filtration system are functioning. These act as heart and lungs in tropical aquariums, after all.
At the same time, have a quick look to check that your tropical aquarium plants have not been uprooted (angel fish are major culprits!) and use your net to catch any loose leaves. Similarly, these begin to break down quite quickly, leading to pollution in tropical aquariums.
Every two to three weeks, you should carry out at least a 20% water change, replacing the dirty water with dechlorinated water at the right temperature. Be sure your tropical aquarium equipment is turned off for the duration and turned back on afterwards. Clean or replace your filtration media as necessary. Never replace it all in one go as you need to keep a nice population of the good bacteria in your tank.
If you have gravel, use a gravel cleaner to hoover up decomposing food and waste. If you have sand, give it a stir. It is important to do this because, with sand, bubbles of toxic gases can build up under the surface. A good rummage around with your fingers is all that’s required. Wait for the sand to settle down before you turn on your filter again, otherwise the grains could lodge inside your powerhead and break it.
That’s really the basics of keeping a tropical aquarium and the key to happy, healthy fish! Tropical fishkeeping is a fascinating hobby for young and old, and a well kept tank makes for a beautiful focal point to any front room. So, you and your tropical aquariums, we wish you many years of pleasure and success.
