Pros and Cons: Gravel or Sand?
Tropical aquarium sand gives a beautiful natural effect and is appreciated by bottom feeding fish such as corys, as coarse gravel can damage their barbells when they root in the substrate for food. Please note that 'live', 'reef' and 'marine' sands will raise PH and are intended for marine tanks only.
If you are looking for sand for a freshwater aquarium, you will need to select only those described as 'inert'. Fish tank sand is available in a great variety of colours and we are proud to stock a great range.
Where aquarium sand is used, it should be stirred fortnightly to ensure no pockets of toxic gases build up, but it is otherwise very easy to maintain. Dirt and debris settles on the surface and can be siphoned off during water changes. We find the handheld battery vaccuums very useful for tidy-ups in between changes (please click on the 'Maintenance' link).
Care has to be taken not to draw sand into the tube. The best way to avoid this is by using a small circling motion 3/4 inch above the sand surface. This creates a vortex and the dirt is sucked up - simple!
