There's nothing worse that the sinking feeling you get at the first signs of disease in your fish. Panic not, many fish ailments are easily treatable with aquarium medication, provided they are nipped in the bud at the first opportunity. Here’s a quick guide to some of the more common diseases and remedies.
White Spot or Ich
Best described at smally white dots like grains of sugar sprinkled on the fish, this is a very common parasite. Fish often carry the disease but do not show symptoms unless there is poor water quality or the fish becomes stressed and its immune is compromised. Ich can be treated easily if caught in time and we stock a range of medications.
Fungus
Grayish cottony patches on skin or gills usually point to fungus, caused by decaying matter building up in the tank. It should be easy to clear up with treatments if it has not progressed too far. Again, we stock a number of aquarium medications.
Fin Rot
This is prevalent where there is poor water quality and/or the fish has become stressed, and is illustrated by ragged, split fins Again, this can be treated with medication, please scroll down and take a look at our range. You should inspect your fish regularly to ensure their fins are in good condition as this requires immediate treatment.
Flukes
This is a parasite which attacks the skin or gills and is indicated by the fish's cloudy skin and flicking or rubbing itself against ornaments or the substrate. Poor water quality can cause flukes to multiply very quickly and it is imperative that fish are treated as soon as symptoms are present.
When medicating your tank it is very important to follow the medication instructions to the letter. Isolating sick fish in a quaranteen tank is an excellent step to take in containing any disease. If you do not have this option, we recommend at least a 30% water change to improve water quality. Remember that good water quality through careful aquarium maintenance is the best prevention of tropical fish disease.
Remember to use a water treatment to remove chlorine and chlorimine from the water put back into the tank, and be sure to remove any carbon from your filter before adding medication otherwise the medication will be absorbed by the carbon.
