Welcome to Tropical Aquarium UK | Great Range of Aquarium Maintenance Equipment and Aquarium Accessories | Huge Discounts on Tropical Aquariums
Ongoing aquarium maintenance is vital to water quality and ultimately your fish's wellbeing. In nature, water flows through the rivers and tributories freshwater tropical fish inhabit and is constantly renewed. Because a tropical aquarium is a closed system, regular maintenance is vital.
Freshwater aquariums require a 25% water change at least once a month. For a crystal clear display, you will need to revise that to 25% per week as a general rule of thumb, though this will of course depend on how heavily stocked your tank is and the effectiveness of your filtration system (filter media needs to be cleaned regularly too and, ideally, this should be carried out at the same time as the water change to ensure it is not overlooked).
Always use a gravel cleaner when doing a water change. As explained in the 'Substrate' link, where sand is used, the end of the syphon should not be plunged into the substrate otherwise sand will be drained off. The easiest way to clean a sand-bottomed tank is by using the syphon 3/4 inch above the surface of the substrate, in small circling motions to create a vortex and suck up surface debris. With good aquarium maintenance you can keep your tank in tip top condition, and a healthy tank equals happy fish.
We stock a huge range of gravel cleaners, syphons, handheld battery-operated vaccuums (ideal for tidyups in between water changes), algae scrapers, tubing, timing devices - just about everything you could wish for to meet your maintenace needs!
