Welcome to Tropical Aquarium UK | Huge Selection of Tropical Aquarium Lighting, Bulbs & Accessories | Great Discounts on Tropical Aquariums
Tropical aquarium lighting is an important consideration. Too little will have an impact on the health of the fish and any live plants; too much can cause algae growth which makes the tank very unsightly. We therefore recommend a maximum of 6-8 hours artificial aquarium light per day.
This need not exclusively be during the daytime. Obviously, with many of us working 9-5, this would mean only seeing your fish at the weekends! A timer adapter (available in our 'Maintenance' link to the left) is very useful. It can be set so that the light comes on in late afternoon and you can enjoy your fish during the evening. The fish do need to spend some time in complete darkness, and we recommend at least 4-5 hours free from both artificial and natural light.
In a planted tank, it is important to remember that whilst the aquarium lighting is off, plants cease to produce oxygen and begin producing CO2. Fish need oxygen in the water to 'breathe'. We therefore recommend the use of an air pump and stone (click on our 'Air Pumps' link for a huge range), either set to come on when the aquarium lighting goes off with a timer, or left on all the time.
Colour-enhancing tubes really do bring out the best in your fish, making reds, oranges and blues incredibly vivid and bringing out the irredescence of their scales. If you have a heavily planted tank, you may wish to opt for one of our specialist light tubes designed to promote plant growth. If you have more than one fitting, tubes can be mixed and matched to create the effect you desire.
