Welcome to Tropical Aquarium UK | Great Range of Aquarium Gravel Substrates | Huge Discounts on Tropical Aquariums
Tropical aquarium gravel is the most popular choice of substrate in the tropical aquarium, and is available in every colour of the rainbow! There is a huge variety of textures and particle sizes on the market and we stock a huge selection - just scroll down the page and take a look!
You will need to ensure that the gravel is inert and will not alter the PH of the water. Particle size is important. 3-4mm allows a good water flow through the gravel, and in doing so 'good' bacteria feed on fish waste and toxins. It is important that gravel is cleaned regularly using a syphon; we recommend once a fortnight, or once a month minimum for a lightly-stocked tank, to draw out larger debris and toxins.
You should consider very carefully your choice of substrate - it won't be so easy to change once the tank is running as it was to put in! Whilst a white substrate will look fantastic initially in your tropical aquarium, it is unlikely to stay that way. Even tiny amounts of fish waste will make the tank look unsightly, as will the smallest amount of algae. An aquarium gravel made up of a number of different shades will camoflauge any detritus and algae, not to mention give a more natural look in the tropical fish tank.
Whether gravel or sand, the substrate must be thoroughly rinsed before use in the tropical aquarium to wash away any fine particles. We do this by placing approximately 2 kilos of substrate in a bucket, filling halfway with water, swilling a few times and draining the water off, and repeating until the water runs clear.
Further consideration should be made when choosing substrate for aquarium plants and we stock a number of types of gravel specially designed to promote plant health.
