Welcome to Tropical Aquarium UK | Great Selection of Internal & External Aquarium Filters & Filter Media | Huge Discounts on Tropical Aquariums
There are two types of aquarium filter: internal and external. Internal aquarium filters are affixed to the back or side of the aquarium, and is ideal for the smaller fish tank. They are inexpensive and very simple both to install and maintain. Aquarium water is drawn into the filter, and passed through the filter media.
Media may be sponge, ceramic noodles or carbon, and is often interchangeable. Dirt and debris is trapped in the media and purified water is pumped back into the fish tank. Whilst regular maintenance and cleansing of the aquarium filter media is essential, it is important to note that filter media should not all be replaced in one go. Beneficial bacteria build up on these 'beds' and it is imperative that some of these are kept back to deal with the nitrogen cycle.
The external aquarium filter is ideal for the mid to large sized aquarium. The advantage of external aquarium filters is that they are kept outside of the tropical fish tank. They therefore do not take up precious aquarium space and are much more discreet, quietly tucked away in the aquarium cabinet.
As external filters are not on show this means they can be bigger, which really does equal better! They are easy to install and require less maintenance than the internal filter. Typically, we would expect to clean media in the external filter once a month, as opposed to once a fortnight with the internal filter.
