Aquarium air stones are not just for decoration. An air stone plays a vital role in the wellbeing of your fish, pumping oxygen back into the water and allowing the fish to 'breathe'.
Live plants absorb CO2 and produce oxygen whilst it is light - all well and good for your fish. However, once the light goes out, the process reverses. The plants will emit CO2 and absorb oxygen, starving fish of air. If you have ever seen your fish gasping at the surface, you will realise that they need air to survive.
In a heavily planted, it is important to restore the depleted by plants once the lights go out. You may wish to use a timer to set your aquarium air pump to come on once the lights are switched off (we have a range of timers at discount prices - just click on the 'Maintenance' link to the left). Alternatively, you may wish to leave the aquarium air stone on all day - this will be beneficial to both plants and fish. Aquarium air stones are so quiet they can barely be heard. The air passes into the tank via a discreet rubber or plastic airline which is simple to install and maintain.
NB It is important to use a non-return valve with the aquarium air stone to prevent water syphoning back down the airline whilst allowing a continuous flow of air to pass through to your air brick.
